A Message from our Headteacher

The Orchards Primary Academy, located in the center of a new development in Northfield, opened on the 1st July 2013. As a Primary Academy with a Pre-School and Nursery, we are able to nurture and support children from a young age until the end of their primary education.

The future for the Orchards Academy is very exciting. Our enthusiastic and talented staff aims to make every child’s learning experience enriching and fulfilling. With enjoyment, challenge and creativity at the heart of our newly innovated curriculum, we are committed to ensuring every child reaches their full potential through inspirational learning.

Curriculum

Over the last few years, we have worked tirelessly to develop and innovate our Curriculum at The Orchards.  We have worked hard to ensure that our children receive a broad and balanced curriculum, steeped in rich and varied learning experiences.  Our bespoke curriculum means that children who attend The Orchards are taught lessons which are rich in knowledge, skills and meaningful experiences. Themes such as ‘Magic and Marvels’, ‘Jungle Journeys’ and ‘Mystic Mayans, Incredible Incas and Amazing Aztecs’, are just a few of the topics that we teach.

Our bespoke curriculum has been developed by staff and children over several years and we are very proud of the opportunities and learning experiences that it offers our children.

At The Orchards, it is our firm belief that a good curriculum needs to teach the right knowledge and skills to address the challenges children will face in the future, and that this knowledge and skills are intrinsically linked.  Our aim is to build children who are well prepared for the next stage in their education.

Our Curriculum Promise offers children a wide range of learning activities and experiences which are unique to The Orchards.  These include visiting a theatre, holding positions of responsibility such as becoming a School Parliament member as well as taking part in inter-academy events with family schools.

Our lessons are planned to be cross-curricular and allow children to explore topics which were built for them and the emerging needs of our local community.  We make full use of our fabulous school grounds which include a Forest Classroom, Anderson shelter and pond!

Year 1

Staff at The Orchards teach exciting sequences of lessons with the children’s learning directly at the heart.  All our topic themes are taught in a cross curricular way allowing the children to make links between component parts of their learning.  Our bespoke curriculum allows staff to teach in creative and innovative ways, allowing the children to lead their own learning from their relative starting points.  Art, Music and Design Technology are important elements of our curriculum and allow children to explore and develop a range of talents.

We want our children to have memorable experiences during their time at The Orchards.  At the beginning of every new unit of work, teachers ask questions to find out children's interests.  Further curriculum development arises from this, sparking curiosity and developing a love for life long learning.  Alongside providing creative opportunities for making and doing, we also have a sharp focus on securing the basic key skills of Reading, Writing and Maths across the wider curriculum.

Year 5

Lessons are planned alongside Senior Leaders and are there is an absolute focus on enabling the children to become independent, self-regulated learners.  Planning is tailored to children’s individual starting points in all lessons.  All staff have very high expectations for every child which is informed by, but not limited to, their prior attainment.  At The Orchards, we believe that children will rise to the expectations that we hold of them.

Lessons are practical, with many opportunities for children to explore ideas with each other through interaction and questioning opportunities.  Teachers deliver dynamic lessons to cater to children with all learning styles.  This produces children who are excited by and have a thirst for learning.
